Chapter Nineteen

Calliope

I went back to my dorm room to change before venturing back out in the halls of the Academy. Predictably, my bags and papers were gone; which meant I was going to be forced to start my essays all over again.

Vitas and his menagerie had probably dumped my belongings into the ocean as well, if only to hide the evidence of what they’d done.

How had things gone so irrevocably wrong? My display of strength should have made him respect me. Instead, it had made him despise me; it had given him a thirst for vengeance.

I was so fucking naive. It was something I’d realize in those suffocating moments beneath the water. The Academy wasn’t as honorable as my father had made it out to be. It was brutal and treacherous, filled with jealousy.

If there was one truth I’d managed to comprehend within merely a few days, it was that only the strong survived.

And the weak were tossed to the sharks.

Or perhaps it was just because I was a woman, and it was more shameful to have been bested by me than any other student here.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case.

I practically dragged my feet towards Defense 101. Because of Vitas and his gang, I’d missed two whole classes, something that would likely get me kicked out of the one place I desired above all others to be.

I walked into Professor Elara’s classroom with my breath held behind my tongue.

A cloud of heat enveloped me as I entered, and with good reason.

All the men were in the middle of vigorous training. They pulled their bodies up and down on thick steel bars, climbed a rope that attached to the ceiling, wrestled each other down on the mats, and ran laps around the spacious classroom.

In the middle of the fray, Professor Elara stood, his arms crossed against his chest. I almost hoped he hadn’t seen me, but I was prone to bad luck, obviously.

“Miss Solandis, how kind of you to join us.”

He didn’t even turn to look at me as he condemned me.

Everyone stopped their exercises as they turned to take me in. From the top of the rope, I made out Vitas’s form. He saw me, cursed, and slid down the rope then hit the ground, sprawled on his back.

I hope the rope chafed his fucking hands.

Bastard.

“Let me guess. You, like Mister Zemir here, were held up with all the traffic in the halls?”

I ignored the sarcasm ripping from his words and turned to look. Sure enough, Rafe was there in the room, his arms holding him up mid push-up.

I hadn’t even known he was in this class because I hadn’t paid attention.

His eyes cut to me and back to the floor.

“I’m sorry, Professor. It won’t happen again.”

As long as bastard students didn’t throw me into the ocean again. I’d be better prepared next time.

His cold eyes met mine. “Ensure that it doesn’t.”

Point taken.

“Hit the rope, Miss Solandis.” He turned away from me to survey the room once more.
